“The Last Southern Gentleman” marks Delfeayo Marsalis’ first full recording with his dad, Ellis Marsalis. And as Delfeayo explained to me over a few weeks of conversation, he didn’t arrive at the title lightly. The idea behind the album is that warmth and human connection — elements valued by antebellum southern society — are losing their foothold in contemporary jazz. Delfeayo wants to bring them back.
